A Room’s Purpose Shapes The People Inside

I think a designer’s responsibility goes a step beyond making a building fit what happens inside it. The shape should match the use. There’s truth in form following function. But that function will also help form the people who live there.

That’s the relationship I want us to pay attention to at Den & Burrow. A room has a purpose, and its layout can encourage routines around that purpose. When we make decisions about the form, we’re also influencing how that room invites people to spend their time.

To me, that makes understanding the function a serious part of design. What are we making room for in daily life? It’s a question worth holding onto as the design takes shape, rather than treating the room’s intended use as something we’ve already settled.

I believe it’s incumbent on the designer and architect to understand that connection. We use it to guide and influence little decisions our clients don’t necessarily see. Those decisions still deserve care.

For me, bringing beauty and connection into a home starts with paying attention to this relationship between the rooms we build and the life they encourage inside.
